Who remembers the late 70′s? Who was always being chased and getting away? Who? Daisy Duke of course, and we finally caught her and she is ready for the prefect forever home. No she doesn’t have those short shorts, but she is a quick as lightening like the old Duke’s of Hazard car and she is just as much fun to watch as that old 70′s sitcom.

Daisy Duke Black Tri Aussie Mix

Daisy Duke is around 7 years old and weighs around 50 pounds. She is up to date on all her shots and is spayed and heartworm negative. While Daisy is not an Australian Shepherd, she is part Aussie, and a lot of Chow, but that just makes her more enduring to her owner.

Daisy Duke Black Tri Aussie Mix

Sadly, as we hear more often lately, Daisy’s former owners weren’t able to afford to keep her, and brought her to animal control. Daisy was put up for adoption by the shelter and was discovered by her foster mom, purely by coincidence, as her foster mom had contacted the shelter regarding another dog. The shelter was full, with more intakes coming in daily, and they were desperate to find rescue for the dogs slated to be put down. Daisy was on that list and so her foster mom had to bring her home.

Daisy Duke Black Tri Aussie Mix

Daisy is a very obedient girl, knows sit, stay (well, for a few seconds anyhow!) and shake. She takes direction very well, and while she did have a few spats with her brothers and sister at first, she is now part of the clan at her foster home.

Daisy Duke Black Tri Aussie Mix

She is content to lay at your feet sleeping and is completely housebroken, and doesn’t get up on furniture (even though her brothers and sister get up there!). She isn’t a fan of her crate, but is wearing a Thundershirt, and that combined with Kongs filled with goodies, she is doing a bit better in the crate day by day. She also has a bit of separation anxiety, which makes the crate a safe choice for Daisy.

Daisy loves to run around the yard with her housemates and also LOVES walks. She walks very nicely using a halter as she is a strong girl and the harness allows better control.

All in all, Daisy will make someone very happy and hopefully she can soon find that home as she deserves a home of her own.

Meet Pepper, a stunning little self Blue Merle Australian Shepherd who weighs around 35 pounds. Pepper is up to date on all her shots, neutered and Heartworm negative. Pepper was given to the rescue because she was a bit more active then the family was ready for.

Pepper Blue Merle Australian Shepherd Female

Pepper is 100% housebroken and crate trained. She rides well in a car and walks okay on a leash. The foster family is working on her walking manners. She also knows basic commands like sit, down, stay (for a little bit;).

Pepper Blue Merle Australian Shepherd Female

Pepper is very good with the children in the home, she will play fetch and chase and run until you either lose your arm or need to sit down. Pepper is reactive to strangers as most Aussie are, she will bark when a stranger approaches and will calm down once she knows the person is allowed to be near her family.

Pepper Blue Merle Australian Shepherd Female

She is dog reactive and as such should be in a only dog home, she is okay on walks and seeing them, but needs to not have to compete for attention in her forever home. Pepper is a lover and is always looking to please her family.

Pumpkin came to New Spirit 4 Aussie Rescue last year. She was taken in by one of the volunteers and when it was time to place her for adoption, well as will sometimes happen, she was not going anywhere. She had won over the family and was going to stay as long as she was needed in their lives.

Pumpkin loved to help her Mom in the garden, she would lay and watch as well as Pumpkin was always at her Mom’s feet.

Pumpkin Was Always Smiling

Sadly Pumpkin felt it was time to go, and with that departure, she leaves behind a family who has a small hole in their heart and and a few tears as well.

We bid Pumpkin farewell and ask all Aussies bow your heads for the lose of this wonderful girl.

Meet Josie a 1 and a half year old Blue Merle Australian Shepherd. Josie weighs around 40 pounds, is up to date on all her shots, spayed and heartworm negative. Josie is housebroken and crate trained.

Josie Blue Merle Australian Shepherd Female

Josie is shy when first meeting people, usually producing a low growl or bark, she doesn’t charge, or show an aggressive move, but more like she is vocalizing her concern. If it is a women, Josie will start to initiate contact and slowly warm up. As for men, well it’s a bit more of a struggle and will take time to break the ice. She is not aggressive, just impartial to men, p[referring to stay away.

Josie Blue Merle Australian Shepherd Female

Josie gets along well with other dogs, will initiate playtime, she does feel her crate is her space and as such will warn other dogs away. Josie plays with toys and is a expert de-stuffer of toys, so be aware you will have white clouds populating the floor if she is left on her own. Josie rides very well in a car, either laying quietly in the back seat or staring out the window. She walks on a leash but will pull slightly. She has excellent recall and has been walked off leash and is always within range of her foster mom.

Josie Blue Merle Australian Shepherd Female

Josie will need a home with a woman in it, and a male figure who is willing to work with Josie, and we are requesting a yard with a fence, if not then you need not apply for this girl. Josie is in the Rantoul Illinois area.

Meet Blue, a 10 month old Blue Merle Australian Shepherd male puppy who weighs around 40 pounds. Blue is up to date on all his shots and is neutered, housebroken and HW negative.

Blue a Blue Merle Australian Shepherd

Blue is one very special Aussie, you see Blue is epileptic, and as such has seizures, sometime 1 a day, sometimes not for a week, we are working with different levels of medication. He seems to respond but then relapses back to having seizures again. The seizures are not hurting him, but it does come with a sad side effect, he looses control of his bowel and urinary muscles, and will sometimes mess himself. This is so sad and he is such a trooper and has one of the most personable attitudes, he loves everyone, children, adults, other dogs, he ignores the cats even. He is very understanding when he messes himself and allows his foster mom and the staff at the vet’s office to bath him so he is nice and clean.

Blue a Blue Merle Australian Shepherd

His seizures are most likely due to a condition called Epilepsy which will require a lifetime of monitoring and therapy to maintain control. He currently is taking Phenobarbital for his seizures but the dosing is still being adjusted to improve his seizure control. It may be that in the future additional medication is required to control the seizures.

Blue a Blue Merle Australian Shepherd

Recently his phenobarb dose was increased because he was still having one short (less than 3 minutes) seizure daily or every other day. An isolated seizure although disturbing to an owner is not really that dangerous for the dog. Seizures that are prolonged or in clusters may be more dangerous for the animal. Also when and animal seizure they may urinate and or defecate and express their anal glands which requires clean up. As challenging and distressing as this may sound Blue is a very happy dog. Hopefully with adjusting his medication we can get his seizure more manageable.

Blue a Blue Merle Australian Shepherd

So if you feel you can deal with an Aussie who is prone to seizures, and feel you will give him the love he deserves, not yell and curse him when he has an accident, then we would love to consider you as his new parent. If you feel this is too much, then please don’t apply for this stunning and gift from above. He will find the home that loves and deserves him.

Magic is good around adults, male or female, no uniform will startle him, he also is very tolerant of children of all ages, though in his excitement he has knocked over the foster mom’s 2 year old, but he meant nothing by it. We would suggest a home with children just a bit older, maybe 4+ years of age. Magic is great around other dogs, wanting to play and displays no resource guarding or issues so far. He ignores cats.

Meet this stunning 16 month old AKC registrable Black Tri Australian Shepherd male who weighs around 45 pounds. Banjo is up to date on all his shots, neutered, Heartworm negative and housebroken and crate trained. Banjo was a surrender to our rescue and when he came, he was lost and overly distraught to lose his family. When I heard that, I knew, our rescue was given a fantastic guy, a dedicated companion and someone that would be a best friend for the rest of his life.

Banjo loves other dogs and can play and play all day long. Banjo is also very good with cats and respects their space and demands.

Austin gets along well with other dogs and is super around adults. He is not a good candidate around children under 6-8 years old as he gets nervous. We suggest no small toddlers for our man Austin.

Charlie is a real character, she loves everyone she meets, adult men or women, children, any age is fine with Charlie, she just loves life and all it brings with it. She is great at playing soccer, loves all toys, loves to play with her step brother Tyler (also an ASRM Aussie for adoption) and is good with the family cat. She will chase and try to play with the cat.

ADOPTED Meet Maggie, a 4 year old Black Tri female Australian Shepherd, who weighs around 35 pounds. Maggie is up to date on all her shots and is spayed, and heartworm negative.

Maggie Black Tr Australian Shepherd

Maggie Black Tr Australian Shepherd

Maggie rides very well in a car and is crate trained. She walks well on a leash, but can get a little distracted if she sees another dog, but this seems to be changing as she gets more comfortable. We suggest a home with another dog, another Aussie would be great to help her burn off the energy she has, though she is one of those low to moderate energy Aussies. She loves to be chased by another dog. She sleeps well all night in a crate and she takes treats as gentle as a feather.

Maggie Black Tr Australian Shepherd

Maggie Black Tr Australian Shepherd

We suggest that she not be in a home with children under 10 years of age as she does display some nervous energy. She was in a home with 8 year old girls, but again we feel older children only. Maggie is also reactive to men when they move about the house. There is no agression, but she will bark, and bark, and maybe bark a little more (well not that bad, but she will alert) so we are suggesting that a female is in the home as she shuns away from men at times.

Maggie Black Tr Australian Shepherd

Meet Rascal, a 5-year old black tri Australian Shepherd mini, weighing in at only 20 pounds. He loves being outside and playing with his foster brother. He is very patient when being groomed and bathed.

ASRM 0043 Rascal

Rascal has lost the use of his right eye, as the result of chasing the wrong horse a few too many times. The eye is healthy and won’t hurt him as it is; however, we are looking into possibly removing the eye and either replacing it with a glass eye or stitching it shut. We are looking for donations to offset the cost of the treatment.

ASRM 0043 Rascal

Rascal came to us from a shelter where he had been for several months. He had apparently never lived in a house before his foster home. He has now become accustomed to all sorts of new things, including tile floors, stairs, and blenders. He is still learning indoor bathroom rules, but is improving all the time.

ASRM 0043 Rascal

Rascal seems to get along with all animals, including cats, but we would recommend not having him around horses, since he seems to like them a little too much. He particularly loves dogs, and would be best fit in a home where there is at least one other dog to socialize with. He is a follower, in both good and bad habits, and will imitate his pack mates.

Rascal is very shy of people touching him, and does not seem to enjoy excessive cuddling and petting. He will take time to get to know his owners. He likes to be near people, and will happily follow his owners around the house or yard just to be near to them. He tolerates petting, and does very well with small children, but he shouldn’t be made to cuddle too much for his own happiness. Rascal has made great strides in this area and enjoys his foster families’ companionship and petting more each day.

Meet Cooper, a 5 year old black tri Australian Shepherd. Cooper is what we would call a high herd drive Aussie. He will chase cats and herd them into corners, barking the whole time. He will alert when a delivery man of the meter reader arrives. So Cooper is all about protection and collecting things.

ASRM 0037 Cooper

ASRM 0037 Cooper

So Cooper does have good traits, he is loyal, and very loving of his family, he wants to please and play frisbee and chase the ball. He rides well in a car and walks well on a leash and crates well. We will work on his bad habits and create an excellent Aussie.

ASRM 0037 Cooper

ASRM 0037 Cooper

Cooper is so far doing as he is expected, in fact his foster dad said he obeys all commands, hasn’t barked or created an aggressive situation, he is really a perfect gentleman. He is doing fine the the resident cat, and even plays with his foster sister Ms. Frankie. We are thinking Cooper, he just needs a strong alpha pack leader who is willing to lay down the rules, and make him stick to it.

Meet Bailey, an 8 year old Black Tri Australian Shepherd female. Bailey is spayed and up to date on all her shots and is heartworm negative. Bailey comes to us from a home that was very sad to see her go, but with a very active 2 year old child, and Bailey not probably a good match for a toddler, she found herself with Aussie Rescue Midwest. Welcome Bailey!

Bailey 8 Year Old Black Tri Australian Shepherd Female

Bailey walks like a proud lady on a leash and rides very well in a car. She is housebroken and really just an excellent girl for a family looking for a moderate energy Aussie. Bailey gets along with other dogs well, and would probably be fine around cats, though we have not tested her for this.

Bailey would do best in a home with children over the age of 8 years old, and a family that would give her daily walks and maybe allowed to tag along on car rides. Bailey knows commands and is very well behaved.

Bailey 8 Year Old Black Tri Australian Shepherd Female

ADOPTED Meet Zoe, a beautiful 3 year old Blue Merle Australian Shepherd female. Zoe is spayed, up to date on all her shots and is housebroken. Zoe is also crate trained and 124% trust worthy left in home alone.

Zoe 3 Year Old Blue Merle Aussie

Zoe is very much your regular type of Aussie, she will alert when a stranger is at the door or in the yard, but calms down once she knows they are welcome. Zoe walks on a leash, but will pull, she is being worked with but since she is so smart, we expect her to have dominated the art of leash walking. Zoe LOVES car rides, she will sit like a perfect passenger, and is always wanting to get in the car, did we mention she LOVES car rides?

Zoe 3 Year Old Blue Merle Aussie

Zoe is very active, she loves to run after a frisbee, tennis ball or play with toys of all kinds. She is a very happy girl who is always wearing the widest smile you can imagine, he foster mom is very much attached to Zoe, and says her smiles are one of the greatest features about her, always greeting them in the mornings happy, smiling and jumping up to show you her pearly whites. Zoe is good around children, she has been introduced to children around 6 years old, but with her energy level, and older child is probably a better match.

Zoe 3 Year Old Blue Merle Aussie

Zoe gets along with other dogs just fine, but we would expect she will want to take the alpha role in the dog pack, so we would want an adopter to be aware of this when thinking of Zoe. Zoe has not been cat tested so we can’t confirm her acceptance of cats. Zoe is a little OCD at times and is very Velcro so expect a shadow that is always at your side, day or night, and someone who will want to play as much as you can play back. Zoe also is known to be quite the helper in the yard…

Zoe 3 Year Old Blue Merle Aussie

Oh boy, the week got away from me, but I still wanted to write something about Cookie. We call her Schoki, which means Chocolate in Swiss-German (I’m originally Swiss) and sounds close enough that she answered to it right away. Anyway, we’re very happy.

Schoki has found her Forever Home

We feel so lucky that Schoki has come into our lives. She is wonderfully affectionate, gentle, easygoing and yet still full of spirit and playfulness. She’s hilarious, too – funny little hopping dances when she’s excited, full of surprises about what she’ll eat or won’t eat, endearing grunts when she’s happy you’re home. Our 6 year old daughter is super comfortable with her and enjoys training her with new tricks. Even my daughter’s friends who have in the past been afraid of dogs have warmed quickly to our sweetie. She loves to always be with us, which is great since my husband works at home. Our neighbors have also been thrilled that we have this calm dog that greets them so nicely. We just couldn’t be happier with her, and we give our heartfelt thanks to Australian Shepherd Rescue Midwest for finding her for us.

Thanks so much!!!

Jack Blue Merle Australian Shepherd

Jack Blue Merle Australian Shepherd

Jack has that typical Aussie reserve, which is why many of us want one, to be part companion, best friend, play busy and protector of us and our home. Jack is this way. He will alert when a stranger approaches his owner or his home.

Jack Blue Merle Australian Shepherd

Jack loves to go for walks, he is great in a car and has never gotten sick from a road trip. Jack loves toys and loves the companionship of other dogs. He loves the proverbial belly rubs and gratuitous petting that all Aussies seem to enjoy.

Jack Blue Merle Australian Shepherd

Jack is probably best in a home without toddlers, as he does have a confined issue when approached, if he sees no way to remove himself from a situation, he will snap, no biting but he will nip the air. As such small children sometimes don’t realize the respect and room a dog should have.

Jack Blue Merle Australian Shepherd

Jack is ready for his forever home and is awaiting a family to bring him comfort and security.

Jack is currently in the St Loius Missouri area, so if you would like to adopt this Blue Merle Aussie, complete an application today and reference ASRM 0086 Jack.

ADOPTED: Meet Ginger, a 45 pounds Red Tri Australian Shepherd female who is around 2 years old. Ginger is Up to Date on all her vaccinations and is spayed. Ginger is the mother of Chloe, another Australian Shepherd in the rescue. Ginger is crate trained, housebroken and a real lover.

Ginger 2 Year Old Red Tri Australian Shepherd Female

Ginger seems to enjoy the company of everyone she meets, men, women, children and strangers. We have not tested around small children so we are suggesting no home with toddlers at this time. Ginger is also a major snuggle bug and will offer up kisses all day long if you let her. She walks well on a leash but does pull. Like her daughter she does get sick in the car.

Ginger 2 Year Old Red Tri Australian Shepherd Female

Ginger likes to chew on bones and play with toys, though she is just realizing they are to play with. Ginger loves to sprawl out on the flora and just hang with you.

Ginger 2 Year Old Red Tri Australian Shepherd Female

Meet Chloe, an almost 1 year old Red and White Australian Shepherd female mix. She is up to date on all her shots and is spayed and ready for her forever home. Chloe weighs around 30 pounds and we figure she will be no larger then that as her mom is on the small side. Her mother is Ginger, who is also available for adoption. Chloe is crate trained and housebroken.

Chloe 1 Year Old Red and White Female Aussie Mix

Chloe is good with adults, men or women, strangers are considered best friends as well as children in their teen years are consider pals as well. We have not tested Chloe around small children or toddlers, so we are suggesting no children under 8 or 9 years old. We also have not cat tested so again this is a question marker we can’t answer.

Chloe 1 Year Old Red and White Female Aussie Mix

Chloe loves bones and will play with toys, but she is still opening up to the world around her. She was not introduced to these items growing up. Chloe walks on a leash but pulls slightly. As for car rides, because she and her mother were pretty much isolated in a barn, they really don’t do well with the motions of a car and will get sick.

Chloe 1 Year Old Red and White Female Aussie Mix

Chloe is still a puppy, and as such will find rugs, shoes, hats, socks, you name it far game to chew, so be aware she is at that chew stage and will be semi destructive if not watched. Though you tend to forgive when you walk into the room, as she will come to you smothering you in kisses and happy wiggles.

Chloe 1 Year Old Red and White Female Aussie Mix

Chloe is currently in the Mahomet Illinois area, so if you would like to adopt this Red and White Aussie, complete an application today and reference ASRM 0082 Chloe.

In November 2011, Ava, a beautiful one-year-old Australian Shepherd with a history of Houdini-like escapes, once again broke free. This time it was from her foster home in Aurora, IL. Immediately, a frantic search began, but to no avail. Scent dogs were employed, search parties were formed, and fliers were distributed, but, despite numerous reported sightings and hundreds of dollars and man-hours spent, Ava still has not been found.

Ava - Lost in Aurora Illinois

Though Ava’s general location had been known throughout this ordeal (based on sightings by community members), her exact location has never been determined. Modern technology offers a simple solution to this trouble, a solution that could have prevented the costs and heartache of the search for Ava: GPS tracking.

A company produces GPS trackers made specifically for companion animals: Tagg – the Pet Tracker. These devices clip on to the collar of the animal, and are accurate up to 25 feet. The location can be tracked via computer or smart phone, giving the exact location of the dog and directions to this location if necessary. In addition to lost dog recovery, the tracker will send an alert if a dog leaves a given radius (e.g. a perimeter could be set around a yard, and if the dog leaves the yard, the owner receives an alert).

Ava Lost Dog Tracker Program

In order to prevent more tragedies like Ava’s escape, ASRM has invested in several of these trackers for use with high-risk dogs. The Ava Lost Dog Trackers (named in honor of Ava) will be placed on dogs that have a history of running or a fear of people. These units cost around $100 per tracker, plus a monthly maintenance fee, which will save the rescue from spending vast amounts of time and money on various attempts to re-rescue, in addition to making recovery almost certain.

Foster homes can request the trackers for dogs believed to be at high risk, and the tracker will be distributed immediately to the person responsible for bringing the dog into the rescue (whether that be a foster parent or a transporter). It is the hope of all at ASRM that these trackers will prevent future tragedies from occurring and allow for the better care of these beloved Aussies.

Interested in a Pet Tracker for your own pet? If you list Australian Shepherd Rescue Midwest as your reference when purchasing, you and ASRM will each receive 6 months of service free.

Dear Aunt Aussie,

I have 3 children and of course an Aussie. With Easter being right around the corner and small children who don’t always listen when I say “don’t feed the dog” I’m concerned about having so much chocolate in the house from the many baskets that relatives inevitably bring to my children. Can chocolate really hurt my dog? Is it true that he can have a little without any issues? How diligent do I need to be?
Signed,

Concerned in Chicago

Dear Concerned,

Never give your dog chocolate – EVER!

Chocolate is poisonous to dogs and here is why:

Chocolate and Aussies

The cocoa bean contains two naturally occurring substances – theobromine and caffeine – both of which are toxic to dogs.

Dogs metabolise theobromine very slowly – it can stay in your dog’s bloodstream for up to 20 hours. During that time it interferes with the body’s functioning mainly stimulating the central nervous system and affecting the heart and kidneys. The lethal dose for theobromine is between 100mg to 200mg per kg of bodyweight; the lethal dose for caffeine is the same.

However, severe symptoms of theobromine poisoning may be evident at much lower doses .

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ Animal Poison Control Center, mild signs of poisoning occur in animals ingesting 20 mg of theobromine and caffeine per kg of bodyweight, severe signs are seen at 40-50 mg/kg, and seizures occur at 60 mg/kg. Dogs get a taste for chocolate – they find the flavor of theobromine addictive. Even if your dog can eat small amounts of chocolate without any ill effect, don’t give him a taste for it because he’ll then try to sniff out and eat chocolate at every opportunity.

The symptoms of theobromine poisoning generally show within 4 to 24 hours of your dog having eaten the chocolate.

The early symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst, increased urination and restlessness.

As time goes on, and your dog absorbs more theobromine into his system, symptoms such as lack of co-ordination, muscle twitching, hyperactivity, increased heart rate and raised blood pressure will be evident. These can lead on to seizures, coma, heart arrhythmia, hyperthermia, and ultimately death.

Even if your dog eats a small amount of chocolate, he may show signs of vomiting and diarrhea due to the high fat and sugar content of the chocolate.

The first thing you should do, if your dog eats chocolate, is to call your vet and describe the symptoms your dog is showing (if any) and the type and quantity of chocolate your dog has, or you think he has, eaten. Your vet will need to treat your dog, but may advise you to make your dog vomit before bringing him to the clinic. This will reduce the amount of theobromine that’s in your dog’s body that he can absorb.

Most dogs recover within 24 to 72 hours of treatment by their vet.

If you really want your dog to eat something that’s like chocolate, you can always use carob which is a good alternative; here a link to a recipe for carob biscotti which your dog with love just as much as chocolate!

Happy Training!

You’ve probably seen it before. Canine anxiety. Herding dogs were bred to use their brains. Their extreme intelligence can be one of their greatest downfalls if it’s under the ownership of a human who either doesn’t understand or just doesn’t care enough to use it. So their brain goes into overdrive trying to balance themselves and voila! You’ve got an anxious Aussie with ‘issues’ or aggression.

Dogs experience anxiety the same way humans do, except dogs aren’t able to visit their therapist and talk it out until the anxiety subsides. They just don’t have that option. So the symptoms of their anxiety might show itself in the dog’s actions. They may pace, they might bark. They might back themselves into a corner and shake. Some will chew on your furniture, others dig at the carpet or dig holes in the yard. And for some dogs, their anxiety will become so bad that it’s released in the form of aggression, either towards other dogs and even towards humans.

“I ordered a Thundershirt through Australian Shepherd Rescue and love it. I've already sent a few friends to your web site and I know one has already received hers. It really works to calm my Aussie. She still is nervous in a bad storm but calmer.” ~ Audrey, Member of Aussie Rescue (Not affiliated with ASRM)

In many cases, basic obedience training and daily exercise will help to overcome anxiety, and thus putting an end to many of these destructive habits that can form out of it. Sometimes drugs will help. But if the owners of these dogs don’t give them what they need to maintain their mental health, the problem becomes worse until finally, the dog is dumped.

Now you see an already anxious dog with quickly forming bad habits dropped into a scary, noisy situation where his ‘issues’ will only grow. Depending on the shelter your dealing with, the dog has one of 2 options. Die there, or get adopted (probably to be quickly returned due to his ‘issues’). Those aren’t great odds.

When we bring an Aussie into the rescue, often times they have been sitting in a shelter kennel for a long time. While we put them through our gentle bootcamp to help get them back on the road to adoption, sometimes we need a helping hand.

Enter, the Thundershirt!

The Thundershirt uses body pressure to help relieve anxiety in dogs. It’s drug free and it’s effects are instantanious. The benefits we’ve seen in using these Thundershirts give our dogs the confidence they need to overcome their fears and anxieties, allowing them to learn and trust again without the mental block that anxiety can create.. Which in turn, leads to more Aussies finding their forever familys!

How You Can Help! You can help ASRM help more Aussies by donating a Thundershirt! Thundershirt has made it easy to help your favorite Aussie rescue obtain these lifesaving Thundershirts.

Meet Tyler, a striking 7 year old Red Merle Australian Shepherd Male who weighs around 80 pounds, we think a small diet is in order. Tyler is neutered and up to date on all his shots.

Tyler Red Merle Australian Shepherd

Tyler is a Cheese Head from Wisconsin, having been sprung from a Humane Society. Tyler was not doing well in a shelter/kennel environment and was showing signs of regressing and being aggressive, this is a tendency we have seen in Aussies that are in a shelter. Once out they revert to excellent adoption candidates. Tyler did just that, once he was out of the shelter, he was a normal, happy, kissing everyone and everything Australian Shepherd. No aggression in this guy!

Tyler Red Merle Australian Shepherd

Tyler is housebroken, and doesn’t need to be crated when the family is away from the home. Tyler walks well on a halter, and is being worked to walk on a collar/leash better. Tyler seems to enjoy all people he meets and gets excited to meet children, he must had had a family in his past that he loved and cared about. Tyler will show interests in cats, sniffing them, but if they hiss or swat he tends to walk away, but if they run, he will take chase, though he won’t do anything when he catches up.

Tyler Red Merle Australian Shepherd

Tyler loves to play and he gets along well with his foster brother in the home. Tyler loves to ride in a car and he knows some basic commands. Tyler is really ready for that new home and is looking for the right family to adopt him. If you are that family, well we expect an application be completed right away. He won’t be around long.

Tyler Red Merle Australian Shepherd

Molly is a 6 year old Black Tri Aussie female. Molly came to Australian Shepherd Rescue Midwest because her senior owner had passed away, leaving Molly with no family to stay with. She was spoiled to the bone by her past owner, who would let her eat from the left overs after a meal. Because of this, Molly is extremely overweight, she tips the scales at 115 pounds! We are working on bringing her down to 50 pounds, and it will take some time, we expect whomever adopts her will continue her weightless program.

Molly Black Tri Australian Shepherd Female

Molly is very curious about cats and likes to nuzzle them. Molly rides great in a car and walks well on a leash, she knows basic commands. Molly is good with everyone. Kid, adults, men and of course women. She can be very jealous of other dogs, wants to be the center of attention. This we feel comes from being the only dog in her previous home. She is learning to be considerate of other dogs in her foster home. She is making great strides at being a good Aussie Citizen.

Molly Black Tri Australian Shepherd Female

Molly is up to date on all her shots and she is spayed. Molly is crate trained, knows how to use a doggy door and also is housebroken. There is one habit that Molly has that has grabbed the hearts of her foster family and the rescue as well. She will sleep sucking her paw, which is a very endearing trait.

Molly Black Tri Australian Shepherd Female

ADOPTED: Say hello to a 1 year old Red Tri Australian Shepherd named Meeka, she weighs a whopping 17 pounds, she could probably loose a few more though, and she is spayed and up to date on all her shots. Meeka was sent to Australian Shepherd Rescue Midwest because her owner felt there was a family out there that could give her more time and attention.

Meeka Red Tri Australian Shepherd Mini

Meeka Red Tri Australian Shepherd Mini

Meeka has been introduced to another dog in her new foster home, she seems to do okay, though she does display a few times of being jealous of the foster sister getting attention. We are working on that but she only gets barmy about it, no actual aggression or attacks. Meeka also has been exposed to small children in the toddler age, and she does fine once she realizes they are part of the home. She actually has taken to being pals with the little girl in the home.

Meeka Red Tri Australian Shepherd Mini

Meeka is housebroken, not one accident since arriving, she is crate trained, and walks well on a leash and rides good in a car. She knows a few commands, but could do with some obedience classes just to round out her behavior, as any dog would benefit from classes in proper doggy manners.

ADOPTED Buck (Protege #0228), a 3-4 year old neutered Blue Merle Aussie, will make someone very happy for the rest of his life. He has expressive blue eyes, wriggles his entire hind end when he’s happy and rarely barks. Even at 54 lbs, he’s a lovable snuggle bunny who raises the bar pretty high for the term “velcro dog” and loves to have his belly rubbed. Buck is housebroken and we are working on better behavior on the leash and not jumping when we come home — he is just so excited to have his people back! But he is learning control as he’s become accustomed to his foster home.

Buck Blue Merle Aussie in Iowa

Buck loves to play with other dogs without barking or growling at them. He plays with all the neighbor dogs through the fences of their back yards, bounding up to them, play bowing (see video), and sticking his nose through the fence in a silent but friendly greeting. Buck would be wonderfully suited for a home without small children due to his size and jumping issues. He does know a number of basic commands, including sit, down, and stay.

Buck Blue Merle Aussie in Iowa

With his very gentle nature and lovable, cuddly personality, Buck can become your perfect companion. Here is a video of Buck interacting with the neighbor’s Boxer:

Buck is currently being fostered in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. If you might be interested in learning more about this dog, please email info@protegerescue.org.

ADOPTED! This handsome guy is Maverick (Protege #0227). He is a 2 year old mini Australian Shepherd weighing just over 20 pounds. He has a thick, red-tri colored coat and one striking blue eye. He is neutered, up-to-date on vaccines and has been started on a heartworm and flea preventative.

Coming into his foster home, Maverick was nervous, shy and unsure of almost everything and even still, some things are quite scary. It was almost a week before he really started to settle in and let his personality shine. He is very affectionate and loves to give kisses. He gets very excited to see his foster family when they get home and will spin circles in his kennel until he is let out. Once out, he will gently jump on us and would lick our faces off if he could! At times he would love nothing more than to curl up next to us for some cuddle time or even be held like a baby and have his tummy rubbed. Occasionally, if we are not paying enough attention to him, he will slide his head under our hands just so we will pet him more.

Maverick Red Tri Australian Shepherd

Maverick knows “kennel”, “sit”, “stay”, “no” and “off”. He is completely kennel trained and is kenneled during the day when we are at work and also at bed time. He can easily go 8+ hours with out accidents and is very quiet when kenneled. He is very good for car rides and will want to look out the window or lay down and take a nap. We have done some off leash work and feel that he has great potential. He has no interest in cats and may even go out of his way to avoid those he lives with. He is not overly excited when meeting new people and shows little interest in other dogs when going for walks or visits to the pet stores.

Before Maverick came to the rescue, he was in an agility class which he apparently excelled at, so that could something he might enjoy doing with his future family. He is a medium-energy little dog, and can be found playing with the other dog in the household, or chasing after tennis balls and frisbees (though it is WAY more fun to run away with them than bring them back to you). There are times, however, that he does not like to share his toys with another dog, but has no problem with you taking them away from him. When he is not playing, he can be found curled up on a doggy bed napping the day away.

Herbert is a stunning, 55lb blue merle Australian Shepherd male Aussie mix. What he’s mixed with is anybody’s guess! He’s got a unique coat pattern that is soft as silk with a docked tail and big brown puppy eyes. Herbert is 2.5 years old and has been neutered, vaccinated and heartworm tested.

Herbert Blue Merle Australian Shepherd Mix

If you are looking for a running partner, Herbert is your man! Herbert requires daily exercise and lots of training and play time each day. One of his favorite games is tug! He’s a very velcro boy who bonds instantly with his humans, and in his natural Aussie way, he guard barks when a stranger comes onto the property. Don’t plan on being able to stay mad at Herbert for any period of time, because he will saunter up to you, put his head down and lean into you for pets and love, begging for forgiveness. And you will not be able to resist!

Herbert Blue Merle Australian Shepherd Mix

Herbert is a high energy guy who will require a strong pack leader who will enforce the rules and give him the obedience training he needs. He’s great with children, good with cats and dogs, however he does possess some resource guarding over his dog toys and bones or chews. Herbert has a strong personality with other dogs and would do best with other dogs that will not challenge him. Cats in the home will need to be dog savvy and willing to tolerate some chasing and dog play. But when he’s tired, the cats in Herbert’s foster home will purr and rub against his head. One swat to the nose by a kitty and Herbert runs in the other direction.

Herbert Blue Merle Australian Shepherd Mix

Herbert is housebroken and doesn’t mind car rides. He is crate trained as well, but if you are home and moving around while he’s crated, he will whine and make sure you know he’s not happy about it. But if you leave the house, he settles right down and relaxes.

If you’re ready to make Herbert your #1, please fill out an <a onClick="_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'Application', 'ASRM', 'Minnesota']); href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/available-aussies-illinois/adoption-application">Application today. Reference ASRM 0076 Herbert.

Meet Scout, a 13 week old Black Tri Australian Shepherd Male puppy. Scout is an Aussie mix, with what we aren’t sure, could it be Husky?

Scout At Banfield before heading to Illinois

Scout is in dire need of surgery to save a very badly damaged back leg, a little boy was home from school and he and Scout were hanging on the bed, and of course as little boys do, he started to use the bed as a trampoline, but sadly Scout was hanging with him, as any good puppy would do. But as the world shifts, so did the little boy and he landed on Scout’s back leg and severely broke his leg.

Scout heading to Love's Park for his emergency evaluation

Scout had to wait all day before help could be provided, this little guy laid waiting for someone to get him medical care, and he was taken to a PetSmart vet facility, the vets at Banfield Pet Hospital assessed the situation and found the procedure was more then the family could afford to cover, and for what will amount to major surgery. The procedure is a pin , to be implanted to secure the shattered bones.

Scout takes a break, the good kind!

The vets started to search for a rescue, this was at 8 o’clock at night, and they needed one that would answer their phone, as many know, this doesn’t happen in the rescue world, but we did. After speaking to the president of the rescue, and sending pictures (which we all know is a cinch to have an adorable puppy taken in) and at least one member of the rescue backing the decision to take him, and of course a peek in the checking book to make sure we could at least get started, it was decided he was coming to Aussie Rescue Midwest.

The next major hurtle was the location. Well he wasn’t 1 town over, he wasn’t 1 county over, he wasn’t even one state away, he was 2 states away, in Kansas City, and he has to get to Rockford Illinois. What happened next is what makes this writer proud to be part of such a wonderful organization, and to deal with people that care, care enough to sacrifice a day from work, and others to drop what they are doing and prepare to take in a scared, severely injured baby.

The Vet from Banfield drove once the choice was made, splinting him up, making sure he had enough pain medication and a route mapped out on the GPS, and all the parties involved called, less then 2 hours after the initial call, Scout was headed out in his own personal transport, accompiened by his own personal doctor.

Scout arrived in Illinois midday and by 3PM was already seen by our rescue’s own surgeon at Brookside Animal Hospital in Loves Park Illinois, a facility that has done numerous surgeries for our rescue, the same surgeons that saved Shayla’s leg after almost a year of surgeries and prayers.

We are asking for help to offset the costs of his initial visit to Banfield, the costs of transporting and his eventual surgery we are having performed as soon as we can. If you could give this special Valentine boy a special gift, we would be very grateful as would Scout.

ADOPTED! This little young Aussie’s name is Romero. He is a Black Tri Australian Shepherd and on the smaller side only 43 lbs. Romero is up to date on all his shots and is neutered. He has a playful demeanor with a sweetness that he just wants to kiss you with. He is a true Aussie that is a total Velcro dog and he will follow you everywhere you go. He is between 2-3 years old. He wants to play ALL the time! He is being fostered with another Red Merle Australian Shepherd male and would do well to have a playmate in his forever home because he has so much energy. He has never been crated in his foster home and has never chewed anything besides his toys and bones. He can chew a bone for hours! He is house broken, listens to his name, sits, gives paw and listens better to a whistle than to the “come” command. He is working on his “come” command with his foster mom. He is great in the car. He does not really play fetch, he just likes to get the ball and then chew it up or throw it to himself and play with it. He does not eat all of his food at once, he likes to eat at his leisure. He has been getting vegetables like carrots, cauliflower and broccoli as treats and is learning to enjoy them. He is fair on a leash, some extra training would be good.

Romero Black Tri Australian Shepherd

He does try to dominate his foster brother a little, another Aussie but has never shown any signs of aggression or anything of the sort. He just wants to play. Our ASRM joke is that he has cute little ants in his pants. He will jump on you when you come home because he is so excited to see you, but he is learning the command, “Off” with his foster mom and is getting it little by little. He needs a little bit of training with his manners but he is a smart little guy with lots of energy, so he will pick up on training quickly and channel some of that energy. He has been around children and is great with them, but he does want to lick their face because they are on his level.

Romero Black Tri Australian Shepherd

He is curious about everything. He is also protective and will alert you when there is someone at the door, in the yard or driveway. He wants you to know that there is someone that is coming that does not live there. He will bark at new people for about 5 seconds so he can tell them that they need to come play with him. He will not jump on the bed unless invited, but he will hop up on you on the couch.

He was given up by his first home and was to be euthanized because the family did not understand the breed. He is a herding dog and is protective. If you have children he will protect them and try to keep them safe in the yard where they are supposed to be. The director of the shelter saved him. He would do well in a home with another dog that has a good amount of energy and wants to play, if not he could get bored. A bored Australian Shepherd could be destructible. A home where he has a job and has a way to use that energy up would be good for him too. He plays all day long with his foster brother, Oz.

ADOPTED: Meet Dundee, a 4 year old Australian Shepherd, Cattle Dog mix, who is stunning to see, even more so in person. Dundee is up to date on all his shots, neutered and is housebroken, and is extremely smart. Dundee is built like a sturdy little tank and weighs in at 50 pounds, although he doesn’t seem that big in person. Dundee has a wonderfully soft coat.

Dundee Blue Merle Australian Shepherd/Cattle Dog

Dundee is a turn-key dog; he is ready to move in with his forever family! Dundee already knows how to sit, shake, lay down, roll over, speak, stay, go and bring/find it. He is all about pleasing you, we aren’t sure if it’s the Aussie or the Cattle Dog in him, but he is quick to catch on to a new task, so even if you feel like there are some tricks missing from his repertoire it surely won’t take long to add them, and of course a treat is always a great motivator for our Australian Shepherd/Cattle Dog mix.

Dundee Blue Merle Australian Shepherd/Cattle Dog

In addition to his many tricks, Dundee is housebroken, crate trained and knows how to walk on a leash. Dundee gets along with everyone he meets, and loves to meet other dogs, though we think he feels cats may taste like chicken, as he will seek out the foster cat, so no cats in his next home please. He’s just such a happy guy with lots of love to give. He’s earned the nickname Circles, since he loves to run around in circles with excitement, and he has one of the cutest butt wiggles around!

Dundee would be great for either a first time or experienced dog owner and would be happy either as an only dog or with a canine sibling to wrestle with. Whether you want to go for a long walk, play in the yard or hang out on the couch, Dundee is ready for anything (although he may ask that you multitask while watching Animal Planet and play tug of war during commercials once in a while). Like a typical Aussie, Dundee loves to be close to his people and willingly follows you wherever you go, so no matter where you find yourself, there will be happy dog right next to you.
